Why Grievance & Dialogue in Agriculture?

In Assam, around one million women produce over 57% of India’s tea but face double marginalization as descendants of bonded laborers and as women. With nearly 80% illiterate (Oxfam), low union representation, and high employer dependence, stronger due diligence is needed. Similarly, on coffee farms in Veracruz and Chiapas, migrant workers face unsafe conditions, and women face added risks like harassment, discrimination, and poor compensation. Education and effective grievance mechanisms play a key role in addressing and preventing these issues.

70%

of child labor and 13% of forced labor occur in agriculture.

50%

out of a total of 335,000 fatal workplace accidents occur in agriculture.

70%

of labor in coffee production globally is provided by women.
